During our bird unit we dissected owl pellets.
No, not owl doots, owl pellets.
The undigested matter that an owl coughs up.
They are a little smaller than an egg. Because they are hard, we put them in a jar filled with warm water and let them sit for a while to soften up. Then we poured the murky water through a sieve and picked apart the bones, fur, etc. The pellets had been sterilized and didn't stink at all. Ok maybe a little like dirt, but that's it.
Jaran's pellets contained 2 small skulls. He found over 20 bones and lots of fur.
Eliza had one larger skull and plenty of bones too.

Annie's pellet had one large skull too, that was still intact until we tried to loosen the gunk around it, then it came apart. I failed to get a picture of her, darn it.
