BYU Study Abroad is putting this on for Spring and Summer Semester. It is a trek from Iowa to SLC and would take 118 days. The entire trail is over 1400 miles. Today, 150 years since the last handcart company traveled the trail, another handcart company is preparing to make the trek.
- Spring 2009: 27 April–20 June, 2009, Iowa City, Iowa to approximately North Platte, Nebraska.
- Summer 2009: 22 June–26 August, 2009, approximately North Platte, Nebraska to Salt Lake Valley.
Where do students live?
Students will camp during their entire experience in traditional camping tents or authentic handcart company tenting.
Will I need to wear pioneer style clothing?
Yes, with the exception of shoes. All participants will be required to provide their own pioneer style clothing. There are many sites online which sell pioneer clothing, or sell patterns to make your own clothing. Many thrift stores, such as Deseret Industries, may also have clothing which will work.
What about showers and laundry?
We will try to provide opportunities to do laundry and shower at least once a week. Laundry and showers will be done in commercial areas such as Laundromats and truck stops, which provide these services for a small fee.
In some areas along the trail these services will not be available every week, but we will try to provide them as often as possible.
What kind of food will we eat?
Three nutritious meals per day will be provided by professional caterers traveling with the company.
Students with special dietary needs may make special arrangements with the director to see that they have what they need.
Will told me about it yesterday, and I think it would be so much fun. Well maybe fun isn't the right word. It would be an experience of a lifetime. I mentioned it to the kids and they think we are crazy. I can dream, can't I?
